I can imagine us saying "let us protect person X" could offend lots of
people, but me breathing could offend people, and I'm not planning on
avoiding that activity.

The only person who I'd worry about being offended by us saying
"let us protect person X" is person X; but fortunately we're not
talking about creating rec.arts.int-fiction.moderated.person-X;
it is up to each individual whether he would choose to participate
in a "shielded" forum; and if person X chooses to participate in
a shielded forum, who cares whether person Y is offended about that?
