They were bonkers, then -- as I understand it, an author who linked your
non-GPL code against his GPL code would be making his code non-GPL, not
yours GPL.  If you were to link against GPL code, though, your project may
have to be GPL, depending on how you're using the other bits.  But IANAL.

I don't like it either, even though I work on several GPLed projects.
