Well, this certainly works perfectly fine.  I'm mystified
why it used to work; the only thing I can think of is that
I used to compile it without strict mode when I was testing
the hints, but that seems really unlikely since I have a
batch file for compiling which leaves strict alone.

Oh well, I guess it doesn't really matter, so thanks.
