My dictionary is packed away; I assume these dictionaries list
the pronunication of the latter as "cloz" not "clos"--that is,
it is "close" in the verb form meaning "to shut", not "close" in
the adjective form meaning "nearby"--i.e. basically the same as
the first word, but a different verb tense?  (Well, I guess
adjectivized in the end, but you know what I mean, what's a little
bit of descriptive imprecision in a pointless off-topic question
about a niggling precision?)
