I'm not even sure what the original question was, but there is an online
reference for copyrights that is very thorough. Particularly helpful, for
me at least, is the section that addresses using excerpts from works as
"fair use". The FAQ is found at:

  gopher://palimpsest.stanford.edu:70/00/ByTopic/copyright/copyright.faq.txt

I got to this on a Web browser, but presumably you can get there from a 
gopher also. As far as I can tell it was just about copyrights, and not
about trademarks, so it might not be what people are looking for.
