You can blame Intel and Microsoft for this one.

I think it has something to do with the operating system you're under.  
If you're in Windows, try to force it over to DOS mode by exiting windows 
completely.  (I have a machine running WinNT and Windows 95, so they both 
have this option.)  As for Win3.1, you're on your own.  Like the other 
guy said, it probably has to do with the memory manager.
