I'm a newby to this group (so be gentle) but I've played lots of interactive fiction 
games including INFOCOM text games.

I wonder whether the method that DOOM used might work well for text based 
interactive shareware.  A well written first stage might prompt people to send
in the money to get the next 3 stages (or levels).  It is critical I think that the
it is made clear that this is just the first part and you can get the rest for X dollars.
Then you make that first stage *really* good (as well as the other levels).
