A Mac Classic is *always* in 24-bit mode--don't go looking for a setting
anywhere.  (A Classic II may be able to run in 32 bit mode; it's an entirely
different beast than a Classic.)  This is due to the 68000 processor in the
Classic, which does not have address lines A24 - A31 connected to the
outside world.

Actually, MacMinix will work in 32-bit mode if you have not more than 8 MB
of (logical) RAM, including virtual memory; however, in that case, the
differences between 24 and 32 bit mode are mainly academic, relating to the
base addresses of hardware components.
