 | On a WinCE toy, you couldn't do something like that because the OS is
 |stored in one or two ROM chips. On a series 5, it MAY be software
 |upgradable. PalmPilots are a definite yes.
 |
 |BTW: Martin Young, nice sig :)

I read an article about PocketBSD in Software Design magazine
(Japanese magazine). PocketBSD runs on NEC's Mobile Gear DOS-version.
Mobile Gear II is a WinCE 2.0 machine, but previous model of Mobile
Gear is a modified-DOS machine. Someone who is Japanese ported
FreeBSD or NetBSD onto the Mobile Gear DOS-version.
I recommend you (Mr. W. Robert Nelson) to post your question about
PocketBSD to the News Groups like fj.os.bsd.misc or fj.os.bsd.freebsd.
Most of articles in those News Groups are written in Japanese, but I
think someone will answer your question in English. I don't know if
Mobile Gear is sold in the US or not, but I think it worth to post one
question-article to those News Groups.

Sorry for my bad English. (My native tangue is Japanese. Sorry.)
