"Protected mode" is nothing like "safe mode".  As far as I know, only Windows
has a "safe mode".  Protected mode, on an 80286 or higher CPU, enables the
CPU to use all its memory, as opposed to "real mode", which uses only the
first megabyte.  Minix on an 80286 or higher always uses protected mode
unless it is booted with "processor=86".
