The drives are RLL.  I used to have one of the Tandons.
As I recall, the setup program was told that no drives
were attached.  That makes me believe that the controller
has a BIOS to take care of the work.  You should be able
to .......  Ooops!  I was going to say "use standard DOS
calls".
