I know what you want is Minix-386vm, but you might find it worthwhile
to download part of the Minix 1.7.1 i386 version package. If you don't
already have a Unix system on which to decompress and detar the
Minix-386vm files you may find all you need on the 1.7.1 i386 ROOT and
USR disks -- you might even be able to use the tools on this disk to
unpack the 386vm files without even installing 1.7.1 on the hard
disk, just using it from ramdisk and a floppy mounted on /usr.
Minix 1.7.1 i386 compress can handle 16 bit compression.

As a matter of fact, although the Minix-386vm system is inherently
more powerful than standard Minix, right now a lot of the parts of the
Minix 1.7.1 system are more advanced than the corresponding parts of
Minix-386vm. This will change eventually of course, as Kees gets
around to bringing Minix-386vm up to the 1.7 level.
