Probably a problem with the Epson or Toshiba.  It shouldn't touch the
hard drive - it just checks that the hard drive controller is there.
There were patches for at least one Toshiba for Minix 1.5, but I can't
recall any for the Epson.  Laptops tend to be idiosyncratic.
