hmmm.

a few hours older and wiser,
ive found that *yes* the TINYROOT will let me run the installation
script; instdist

and this actually will run all the installboot parts
without event, except that on completion, my HD still wotn boot :(

booting straight gives me a "read error" looks like while or before
it loads bootmon.
boot from floppy, and then at bootmon menu, i give it

boot /dev/hd1 or
boot /dev/hd1a (where my root partition is)
and it works just fine, as does
rootdev=/dev/hd1a
for mounting root fs while booting from floppy

the only variance from the dinstallation script was
at the point where it ran
installboot -d /dev/hd1a /usr/mdec/boot(argh. whatever that file is called ;)
and then /boot as the last argument on the line.

since i was booting from TINYROOT with /boot and /minix squirreled away
outside the fs, i didnt have a /boot, so i used the /usr/mdec/boot
and the /boot from ROOT disk, alternately, and continued
manual installation from there

(installation broke as soon as it hit that line that it couldnt process
(because i didnt have a /boot)

anyone know what "read error" could mean?

please dont tell me its a driver problem :(
this is with the BIOS driver from the TINYROOT,
which hasnt given me any other problems to date.

argh. its 3:15 am, and i need some sleep
and am growing incoherent again.
(or rather even less coherent than i am already!!!!)

summarize:
i've done installboot -d, and -m;
i've made both /dev/hd1 and /dev/hd1a selected
as bootable. (should i have both of them set that way?)
should i change one of them?)

anyrate
i wish you more sleep than i have

goodnight

-marc
