MAIN NEWS 28th August 1/13
Good morning. It's Sunday the 28th of August and here is the GB2RS news
broadcast, prepared by the RSGB and intended for all radio amateurs and
short-wave listeners.

First the headlines:-

Morse tests at the Telford Rally are not free

New RSGB telephone Hotline number

RSGB South West Regional Meeting in Bristol

And a new QSL sub manager for the G3LAA - NZZ series

First, we have an urgent announcement from the Telford Rally Group,
organisers of the Telford Rally, who wish to apologise for any
misunderstanding that resulted from their advertisement in the August
edition of RadCom. They wish to point out that Morse Tests will be run
in accordance with the rules laid down by the RSGB - the free item
should refer to rooms made available for the Morse Tests by the Rally
Group. Further Rally details are covered later on in this broadcast.

September RadCom was posted to all members at the beginning of last
week. The leader, on page 4, has details of a new telephone Hotline for
members, scheduled to commence on Monday 12th of September. The
telephone number given is incorrect, the area code should be 0956 and
not as printed. The correct number is 0956 70 73 73.

Early notification of the Regional Meeting for South West England and
South Wales: The third RSGB Regional Meeting is scheduled to take place
on Saturday the 22nd of October at the New Friend's Hall, Purdown,
Stapleton, Bristol. The doors will open at 12.30pm, when light
refreshments will be available and the meeting will commence at 2pm.
Several members of Council will be in attendance plus HQ staff. Further
details will appear in October RadCom and via GB2RS news service over
the coming weeks.

The RSGB QSL Sub-Manager for the G3LAA - NZZ callsign series is now Mr D
Keely, GW0OGI, whose address is: Pensarn Cottage, Bryn Du, Ty Croes,
Anglesey LL63 5SH. He has taken over from Mr A Giles, G4OJH.

A new 2 metre repeater GB3BF, operated by the Bedford Repeater Group
became operational on Sunday the 14th of August. The repeater is located
at Manton Lane, Bedford and operates on channel R2, which has its output
on 145.65MHz and input on 145.05MHz. Further details and/or reports
should go to the repeater keeper G1BWW, whose address is correct in the
RSGB Call Book or via packet @ GB7ZPU.

Now attention all amateurs living in the East Highland area of Scotland.
The RSGB is looking for more Novice Instructors to cover Wick and the
surrounding area. Anyone interested is requested to ask for the booklet
'Novice Licence Training Scheme', which contains the necessary details
and an application form. Contact the Amateur Radio Department at RSGB
Headquarters by telephoning 0707 659015.

Finally in the main news, SSL has informed the Society that as of last
Wednesday morning, the latest callsigns issued were in the G0 Victor

SOLAR NEWS 28th August 6/13
And now the solar factual data:

The period from the 15th to the 21st of August has seen solar activity
at moderate levels with several M Class solar flares. On the 14th, the
largest flare of the period took place at 1738 UTC, which was rated at
M3.9/1N. Further flares took place on the 15th and 17th, two on the 18th
and a single flare again on the 19th. All flares erupted from sunspot
region 7765. On the 14th when the group was at its largest 29 spots were
reported within the group. This is the most flare prolific period for
many months. The sunspot indices generally declined, giving a mean of 56
for the period. The solar flux has not varied much day to day and
averaged 75 units for the period. The 90 day solar flux average on the
21st of August was 78 units.

The geomagnetic field has, in spite of the flare activity, declined from
very unsettled to quiet levels, with the period averaging only an Ap
index of 8 units. The state has been 'nil nothing to report' all the
period. The aa indices as supplied by the British Geological Survey for
the 9th to the 15th of August were relatively quiet, with the 9th being
very quiet, with periods down to only 2 nanoTeslas. The average for the
daily index was 31.3 nanoTeslas about K3. The X-Ray flux levels averaged
A4.4 units but were declining every day from A7.1 on the 15th to A2.0 by
the 21st.

I'll repeat the figures. Spots - 56; Flux - 75; Ap index - 8; X-ray flux
- A4.4.

Now the ionospheric data for Central France:

Some of the missing data is now to hand but Meudon is now only sending
data twice a week which means we are still behind. The F2 daytime
critical frequencies at Poitiers for the 12th to the 17th of August
remained reasonably steady with the period averaging 6.7MHz. The
darkness hour lows averaged 2.7MHz, with periods of Blanketing E lasting
up to 4 hours some days. The highs are now about 1900 hours with the
lows about 0400 hours.

I'll repeat the figures. Highs - 6.7MHz; lows - 2.7MHz.

Now the ionospheric data for the north:

We still do not have any data from Ekaterinberg - it is not known why.
The GEOS-6 satellite was finally closed down on the 19th August. This
was one of the first satellites that monitored the solar wind and gave
the cloud weather pictures for television.

And lastly the solar forecast:

This week the active side of the sun will be rotating away and solar
flux levels are expected to fall to about the 75s. The geomagnetic field
is expected to be just unsettled - about an Ap index of 10 units. MUFs
during daylight in the south are expected to be about 20MHz, and the
darkness hours about 11MHz. The best paths are expected to be
north/south.

And that's the end of the solar information.
