Introduction

     Droids is a game of robotic tank warfare for 10-20 players.  Each player
starts with the mainframe housing his Artificial Intelligence, a factory,
and a large initial budget to purchase his starting droids.
     Droids are modular tanks controlled by a central mainframe.  Each
droid is individually constructed from any number of the 28 different
module types, and may be reconfigured at the end of any turn.  There are 9
different weapon modules, including conventional cannons, missile launchers,
energy weapons, and minelayers, 6 different ammunition modules, 4 different
defensive modules, and 9 modules falling into other catagories such as
power supply, treads, and electronics.
     Turn planning, submission of orders, and reporting of results all done
exclusively through the sophisticated DROIDS program, available here in
RULES.DRO.  DROIDS displays 16-color high resolution maps with EGA or VGA,
and works with CGA and Hercules boards as well.  With DROIDS, you can step
back and forth through every portion of your turn, examining each game phase
as it appeared last turn and as you plan it to appear next turn.


Game Play

     Play is fast and furious.  Typically at one player is eliminated by
turn 3, and certainly at least one by turn 8.  Players first wrest
control of the local neutral factories from their guardians, and then
mount assualts on their neighbors.
     Combat is a test of both tactics and droid design.  No one droid can
accomplish everything, so you must create specialized droids.  The
mix of modules makes a wide variety of styles possible.  Do you specialize
in droids sniping with X-ray lasers at long range, or try for a shock wave
of droids armed with short range AutoCannons or Plasma Guns?  Do you buy
energy weapons, with their low weight and freedom from ammunition, or
missile launchers, which are unaffected by Energy Absorbers?  Do you rely
on distance and Stealth modules for protection, or heavy shielding?  The
choice is yours.
