Making the Address Books of eMail Server 3.x Available in an External Mail Client

Situation

Procedure

There are three address books:

1. The system address book:
   The baseDN for configuration is here: dc=suse,dc=de
   Login is anonymous.
2. The public address book:
   In this case the baseDN is: o=addressbook,dc=suse,dc=de
   
   • eMail Server 3: Login is anonymous
   • eMail Server 3.1: User must authenticate as for the private addressbook
     • Outlook and most other LDAP-Clients
       Name: uid=user,dc=suse,dc=de
       Password: the regular password
     • Netscape 4.x
       The BaseDN o=addressbook,dc=suse,dc=de does not work any longer. Netscape tries to determine the username from the email address, anonymously querying the LDAP-server.
       
       Workaround: Try the BaseDN dc=suse,dc=de. In this case the public and system addressbook are read simultaneously.
       
       Alternative: read at http://developer.netscape.com/docs/manuals/communicator/ldap45.htm about manual configuration of Netscape. It's necessary to setup the Directory Service as usual and after that, to insert a line

       user_pref("ldap_2.servers.<NAME_OF_THE_DIRECTORY>.auth.dn", "uid=user,dc=suse,dc=de");
       

       in preferences.js. Use this on your own risk and please refer directly to Netscape, if it does not work as wanted.
3. The user's private address book:
   
   • Outlook and most other LDAP-Clients
     BaseDN: ou=addr,uid=user,dc=suse,dc=de
     Name: uid=user,dc=suse,dc=de
     Password: the regular password
   • Netscape 4.x
     BaseDN: uid=user,dc=suse,dc=de
     Name: user@suse.de
     Password: the regular password
