Symptom:

You want to install StarOffice but you do not know how.

If errors occur, see information at the bottom of this article.

Solution:

This is a 3-part step-by-step installation help:

    1.
    1. Log in as root user

    2. Insert CD3 of the SuSE Distribution 6.0 or 6.1 or CD4 of the distribution 6.2

    3. Start Yast and select choose/install packages, then change/create configuration

    4. Select the package so_en from the series pay (by pressing the space key)

    5. Confirm your selection by pressing the key F10

    6. Press again F10 and select start installation from the menu to install the package so_en

    7. After installation, quit Yast.

    2.

    1. Log in as the user who will be working with StarOffice. You need to install StarOffice for each user wanting to use it.

    2. Start X and your windows manager, e.g. by typing startx

    3. Open a terminal window (xterm), e.g. for KDE users: click on the desktop with the right mouse key. Select execute command and type xterm.

    4. Enter the command soffice or sosetup.

    5. The setup program of StarOffice starts and leads you through the next steps.
      Click on mediakey and enter the mediakey located on the first side of your SuSE installation manual. You can then test StarOffice during 30 days. You will be reminded about the end of the trial period after each start of StarOffice. You can register online by clicking on the online registration button.

    6. If you do not have a mediakey, use the general key as follow:

      1. In the first window, select company/campus key and enter the general key:

        In the second window, enter in the field company:

        Sun Free Download Version

        In the next fields, enter your personal data. If you do not enter your e-mail address now, you will not be able to do it later.

      2. StarOffice is now installed. The next time you start StarOffice, your data may have disappeared. To fix this, you need a regpatch from the StarDivision FTP server:

        ftp://ftp.stardivision.de/pub/support/so51/unxlnxi/regpatch

        Download the file in binary mode.

      3. Copy the file into the StarOffice Lib directory:

        cp regpatch /opt/Office51/lib/

        change its mode to executable:

        cd /opt/Office51/lib/

        chmod u+x regpatch

        install the patch (from /opt/Office51/lib/)

        ./regpatch

        log out:

        exit

      4. You can then start StarOffice by entering the command soffice.

    7. The SuSE Support Team does not answer questions related to StarOffice. Check for help at : http://www.stardivision.de/

    Problems related to the installation

    Symptom:

    Installing StarOffice in a NFS directory fails. After setting up StarOffice 5.0 using sosetup or soffice, you start the application and it freezes.

    Reason:

    You have mounted your home directory via NFS. StarOffice cannot lock the file .sversionrc

    Solution:

    You have 2 possibilities:

    Symptom:

    StarOffice 5.0 / 5.1 installation problems. Starting StarOffice, you get the following error message: "This version of StarOffice is no longer valid. Please reinstall StarOffice"

    Reason:

    you receive this error message if a file with the name .sversionrc already exists in the HOME directory of the user for whom you want to install StarOffice.

    Solution:

    delete this file from the HOME directory:
    cd
    rm .sversionrc
