Printer: Reinstalling a printer

SuSE Linux: Versions up to (including) 7.3

Request:

This may especially be necessary if you don´t make a new installation of your SuSE Linux but rather an update from an older version of SuSE Linux. And it's also advisable when inconsistencies in the packages and (configuration) files of the print system are suspected.

Procedure:

Please log in as user root at a console.
If you use a graphical login, switch to the console with [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[F2].
([Alt]+[F7] will switch back to the graphical user interface.)

I) Erase the packages and files of the existing print system:

1. Please enter the following commands:

        rclpd stop
        cd /var/spool/lpd
        rm -r *
        cd /var/lib/apsfilter/bin
        rm *
        cd /etc
        rm apsfilter*
        rm printcap
        rm /etc/gs.upp/*   (from SuSE Linux 6.4 on up)
        cd
      

2. Delete the following packages using YaST:
   (In the case that the package is listed - i.e. installed.)
   • choose/install packages
   • delete packages

          [X] a2ps
          [X] aps
          [X] gs_both  (resp. ghostscript-both)
          [X] gs_fonto  (resp. ghostscript-fonts-other)
          [X] gs_fonts  (resp. ghostscript-fonts-std)
          [X] gs_lib  (resp. ghostscript-library)
          [X] gs_x11  (resp. ghostscript-x11)
          [X] lprng
          [X] lprold
          [X] plp
          [X] cups
          [X] cups-drivers
          [X] cups-drivers-de
          [X] cups-drivers-cs
          [X] xpp
          [X] kups
          [X] qtcups
        

   • press [F10]
   • answer the next questions accordingly
   • Mainmenu
   • Exit YaST

II) New installation of the packages and files of the printer system:

1. Please install the following packages anew with YaST:
   • choose install/packages
   • change/create configuration
   • choose series "ap"

          [X] a2ps
          [X] aps
          [X] gs_x11  (resp. ghostscript-x11)
          [X] gs_fonto  (resp. ghostscript-fonts-other)
          [X] gs_fonts  (resp. ghostscript-fonts-std)
          [X] gs_lib  (resp. ghostscript-library)
        

   • press [F10]
   • choose series n

          [X] lprold
        

   • press [F10] twice
   • start installation
   • Main menu
   • Exit YaST

2. Do na new setup of your printer.
   Follow the steps outlined in your manual, chapter "Printers" or use the following article: Installing a printer since SuSE Linux 6.4 .
   Afterwards start the printer spooler daemon with the command

        rclpd restart
      

   before you make a printout.
