Installing an USB printer with SuSE Linux 7.0

Symptom:

During installation or after configuration of the USB printer using YaST2 the printer worked but after a reboot the USB printer doesn't work any more.

Cause:

After the reboot the kernel module printer is not loaded automatically (but it is loaded by the YaST2 printer configuration).
For USB printing the modules usbcore and either usb-uhci or usb-ohci and the module printer are needed.

Solution:

As user root load the printer module using the command
modprobe printer

To get this module automatically loaded at boot time
either append this command to the file /sbin/init.d/boot.local
or (the more correct way) add printer to the variable USB_DRIVERS in the file /etc/rc.config.d/usb.rc.config
(e.g. USB_DRIVERS="usb-keyboard mouse printer").
