Setting Up an Internet Connection via Cable Modem with SuSE Linux 8.0 or Higher

Situation
You want to set up an Internet connection via cable modem.
Procedure
- Log in as root to the system and start YaST2.
- Start the module
Network card configuration at the menu entry Network/Base.
- Select your network card.
If your network card is not automatically detected, select Other (not detected).
In this case, enter the suitable module at the field
Module name.
Network interface is Ethernet and the network card's Device number
is 0.
- If you use a static address, click
Static address
configuration and insert the address
in the corresponding field.
If DHCP is used, do not change anything.
- Press
Next then Finish.
If you use DHCP, you might need to enter the host name as assigned by the
provider in the field
dhclient_hostname_option in Yast2's menu entry System -> Sysconfig Editor -> etc.
The option dhclient_modify_resolv_conf must be set to yes.
