Notes from Editor

Radiodifusora Nacional de Colombia. Broadcasting from Bogotá on 4955 kHz. I
heard this station the first time on January 30th at 2200 UTC, broadcasting
Llanera music and Vallenatos with an slogan like La Voz de la Cultura. They gave
a collect call free telephone number for reception reports in Bogota: 222-0907.

< Seems to me the station that is reported the most on 3.360 is Voz del Upano in
Ecuator.
Actually I think La Voz de Nahuala in Guatemala is much more common on 3360.

My original post is a shining "example" of inattention, sloppy typing, or
dyslexia. The station I heard was on 3306.0. I repeat 3306.0 kHz. I finally
heard a ID I could be certain of and that indicated the station is in Zimbabwe.
Once I discovered it was in Zimbabwe I looked in Monitoring Times, and the
specifically mentioned this station in Glenn Hauser's column in the Feb '95
issue. It hasn't been on the air all that long.

RADIO THAILAND!!!

DATE: Feb-7-95 1:07am
Greetings.
The time is 01:04UTC and I'm located in Hickory, NC. Right now, I'm listening to
Radio Thailand on 11905kHz in Thai. I just caught the tail end of the hour-long
English broadcast to E.N.Am and I'm not believing how strong and clear the
signal is! I gave it a SINPO of 54345. I'm using a Radio Shack DX-440 with
their amplified antenna and one of their roll-up antennas clipped to the
DX-440's whip antenna. This is the first time I've been able to discern the Thai
language! If anyone else out there is monitoring this broadcast, let's compare
notes!!

This must be a broadcast via the VOA's transmitter site in Udorn, Thailand. The
transmitters are 500 kW. They were using a 15 MHz frequency a few months ago at
this time. It was really fun to hear something so strong from that area of the
world!

Thanks for the great info again! Here are some items from S. Virginia,
Cornland.
Loggings Report:
COSTA RICA 6.005.8 R. Reloj @ 0250 with SS pops then into ID by OM

SUDAN 9.200 R. Omdurman @ 0325 Long chants by OM then into
call to prayer. This was fairly obvious as they almost seemed to go live as the
microphone was picking up not only the Musim but also city noises. 2/6 RIPPEL,

IRAN 9.022 VOIRS @ 0310 in seeming Farsi with music
sounding almost sub-continental. 2/6 RIPPEL, VA

SOMALIA 6.870 R. Mogadishu @ *0330 with dead air till 0330
then directly into Q'Ran chants till 0348 then tlx in AA by OM. Note:
transmission was in AM, not USB. Maybe they have a bit more electric power and
can re-insert the carrier back in the transmission. Been looking for this one to
show up here for quite a while. 02/06 RIPPEL, VA

ERITREA 4.999.5 V. of the Broad Masses (presumed) here @ 0415
w/ long talks by YL then into unrecognizable mx. Talks by OM in lang 0445 till

ALGERIA 0.153 Rdiff. Algerienne, Bechar @ 0015 yes, the
Bryant LW bug bit and I found this one at fair levels w/ AA style MX. 2/5
RIPPEL, VA

EQ. GUINEA (Malabo) 6.250.40 R. Nac de Guinea Ecutorial @*0457 with anthem
then directly into Afro-Pops. No sign of any anncrs at all during the 20 minutes
I listened. 2/7 RIPPEL, VA

NIGER 5.020 L.V. du Sahel in FF @ 0530 with afro-pops and
anncr w/ mentions of Niamey by OM in FF. 2/5 RIPPEL, VA

Also, we are hearing what I am about 99% sure is a latin on 5.453.9 from about
0100 - 0200. Most likely a Bolivian or Peruvian as it's gone before the usual
0400 s/o of the other latins.

< Colombia: Radio Ecos del Cobeima on 4.785 changed ist name to Radio Super de
Ibagui. There is a small change in their address, too: Parque Murillo Toro No

Actually it is not a name change, but rather a sort of frequency switch and
creation of a new station. The SW and MW frequencies of Ecos del Combeima
became the new station Radio Super de Ibague. Ecos del Combeima took over the
MW frequency of La Voz del Nevado, which apparently has ceased to exist. These
are all co-owned stations in the Super network.
I had heard the Radio Super de Ibague IDs on 4785 back in December. Then while
MW DXing in western Venezuela in late Dec/early January, I heard and IDed Radio
Super de Ibague on Combiema's listed MW frequency (1020, I think) and Combeima
on Nevado's listed MW frequency (1110, I think). Kind of sad to see the La Voz
del Nevado station name disappear. Nevado is the word for a snowcapped
mountain, of which there are a lot in this part of Colombia. Too many
picturesque local station names are disappearing in Colombia as networks give
the stations a generic network ID. BTW, I just got my '95 WRTH a few days ago
and checked and these changes are already there. I had taken the 1994 WRTH on
my trip with me and found a number of name and other changes in my listening.
However, I'm now comparing my MW log with the 1995 WRTH and most of the changes
I noted are already in the 1995 WRTH. I think that shows just what a great job
the WRTH does in keeping info up to date! (Take a bow, Andy ...). Of course,
there still are a few changes not in the 1995 WRTH which I'll be e-mailing Andy
next week once I finish comparing my log with the 1995 WRTH. I'll also post them
here.

On Radio New Zealand International's mailbag program last night, Arthur Cushen
reported Voice of Vietnam on 5940 kHz to North America at 0500 UTC, probably
from a Russian transmitter in Siberia or the Far East. Anyone heard it yet?

Yes, I have, several times. One time, there was some interference from 5935,
but when I tried again a couple of nights later, it sounded much better.
However, since I am in Eastern North America and I hear it reasonably well at
0500 without flutter, I doubt that it's in the Far East, since it is pretty well
impossible to hear something on 5940 from the Far East at 0500 where I live.
Somewhere else in Russia, maybe?--it is a huge country!

1170 COLOMBIA Medellin, R. Nutibara HJKW, DEC 7 0530 - (tent.), well on top of
WWVA at times with SS mostly news, numerous Colombia mentions, as well as
several Medellin mentions. Could have sworn I heard the "Eco" slogan which is
the slogan listen in my 1987 WRTH, but my 1994 ed lists this slogan. Anyone
have a scoop on this one? [Coniglio-NY] (More likely, you got RCN,
Barranquilla, which is widely heard. It's a national network, so they very well
might mention Medellin - Jim)

STATION NEWS
ANTIGUA: Have you had any recent reports for Caribbean Radio Lighthouse,
Antigua, on 1165. I haven't heard this one in a long time. Do you know if
they're still on the air? [Funkenhauser-ON] (I don't recall seeing any recent
reports - Jim)
