\ql\fi-20\li560 This document is a brief description of the TransSys Dial-Up IP SLIP/CSLIP software which is available from
\f2 Mamakos\\TransSys Consulting
\f0 , <info@TransSys.COM>.\
\

\pard\tx1120\tx1680\tx2240\tx2800\tx3360\tx3920\tx4480\tx5040\tx5600\b\ul What it does\

\pard\tx560\tx1120\tx1680\tx2240\tx2800\tx3360\tx3920\tx4480\tx5040\tx5600\b0\ul0\fi-20\li560 The software package is an implementation of both SLIP (Serial Line IP) as defined in RFC-1055 and CSLIP (TCP header compressed SLIP) described in RFC-1144). This is an implementation for the NeXT line of workstations, either the 68030 based cubes or any of the 68040 based workstations. Release 2.1 of the operating system is recommended. \
\
The TransSys Dial-Up IP software incorporates advanced features such as dynamically establishing a call to a remote system when traffic is destined to is, as well as a full-featured scripting language which the dialing daemon uses to establish the call. For efficiency, a dynamically loaded kernel device driver implements the SLIP/CSLIP protocols, while a user-level daemon process manages allocation of serial ports and dialing of remote systems.\
\
Implementation of TCP header compression make use of the dial up SLIP interface a real joy to use with interactive network protocols such as
\b telnet
\b0 and
\b rlogin
\b0 . A typical TCP segment of 41 bytes (40 bytes of header plus 1 byte of user data: the keystroke just types) is reduced to 3 bytes! The remote-echo performance improvement is dramatic. If you've used SLIP before, you can
\i never
\i0 go back!\
\

\pard\tx1120\tx1680\tx2240\tx2800\tx3360\tx3920\tx4480\tx5040\tx5600\b\ul Who should use or buy it?\

\pard\tx560\tx1120\tx1680\tx2240\tx2800\tx3360\tx3920\tx4480\tx5040\tx5600\b0\ul0\fi-20\li560 This software package is intended for advanced users of NeXT platforms who are already familiar with TCP/IP based networks and their configuration. Some experience with SLIP is also helpful. While installation and configuration of this software is not particularly difficult, experience in configuring and managing TCP/IP based networks, or the assistance of such a person may be necessary to
\fc0 successfully incorporate a remote NeXT host into a much larger, complex network.\

\pard\tx1120\tx1680\tx2240\tx2800\tx3360\tx3920\tx4480\tx5040\tx5600\b\ul\fc0 Demo software available\

\pard\tx560\tx1120\tx1680\tx2240\tx2800\tx3360\tx3920\tx4480\tx5040\tx5600\b0\ul0\fi-20\li560\fc0 If you have doubts about the suitability of the software for your application or situation, you can try a freely available, fully functional version which implements just SLIP (but
\i not
\i0 CSLIP or Compressed SLIP). This version is available from many of the anonymous-FTP archive sites on the Internet; the file name will be something like
\f1 SLIP_920207.tar.
\f0 This version also includes a demo of the Compressed SLIP capability for a true try-before-you-buy, no surprises evaluation. If you can't obtain the software from an an anonymous FTP archive site, send me a floppy disk and return postage, and I'll send you the demo software.\
\
This free version is a full implementation of SLIP, and you are free to continue using it for as long as you wish. I feel that it is important that a quality SLIP capability be available for the NeXT platform if the NeXT is seriously going to be considered a "real workstation."\
\

\pard\tx1120\tx1680\tx2240\tx2800\tx3360\tx3920\tx4480\tx5040\tx5600\b\ul\fc0 Support available\

\pard\tx560\tx1120\tx1680\tx2240\tx2800\tx3360\tx3920\tx4480\tx5040\tx5600\b0\ul0\fi-20\li560\fc0 Support for the package is somewhat limited: no technical support is promised; this is reflected in the pricing. There are no tech support 800 number or glossy manuals. Again, this distribution channel is more oriented toward users with prior TCP/IP and SLIP/CSLIP experience and
\i not
\i0 for novices in the field. If you have doubts of your ability to use this software, you really ought to try the free version first before spending your money. If you require a more extensive degree of support than can be offered by an occasional Internet EMAIL message, you should consider a vendor which has licensed this software and will be enhancing it with more "friendly" configuration tools.\
