III. Call For Papers and Participation - Micro-Kernels

             Call For Papers and Participation

        Micro-Kernels and Other Kernel Architectures

                     April 27-28, 1992
                    Seattle, Washington

The Usenix workshop on MicroKernels and other Kernel Architectures
is aimed at comparing and contrasting existing micro-kernels and
their macro-kernel counterparts. Industry pundits are claiming
that microkernel technology is the next step in kernel design.
This workshop intends to make a detailed technical investigation
of the microkernel technology to discover whether the claims have
merit or are just this year's buzz word. The intent of the workshop
is to identify micro-kernels strengths and weakness in comparison
to each other and to the macro-kernels that they hope to replace.
The comparisons will include functionality, modularity, ease of
  extension, maintainability, and performance.

The first day of the workshop will be devoted to talks of a
tutorial nature on currently important microkernels and other
kernels. Already committed are talks on Mach, Amoeba, Chorus, &
Plan 9. Other talks will be added.

The second day will be devoted to papers on all aspects of
microkernels or kernel architecture. Papers are being solicited
in areas including but not limited to:

        Distribution

        Performance

        Fault tolerance

        Multiprocessing

        Scalability

        Real-Time on Micro-Kernels

If you are interested in submitting papers for either day,
please send an extended abstract with an outline of your
paper (email preferred) to the program chair (Lori Grob).

IV. Winter 1991 release of NeXTanswers available

The Winter 1991 release of NeXTanswers is now available on the
Internet archive servers. NeXTanswers is a collection of answers to
commonly asked technical questions about the NeXT Computer System.
The topics covered include system administration, programming, and
NeXT applications. When incorporated into Digital Librarian,
NeXTanswers supplements the existing on-line and printed
documentation, helping you to understand and apply the power of the
NeXT Computer.

We recommend that you obtain NeXTanswers and have it installed on the
NeXT computers at your site. NeXTanswers can be obtained three ways:
by ftp from an archive server, by email from Purdue, or as a
subscription on floppy disk from NeXTedge.

Each release also includes instructions regarding how to install and
use NeXTanswers.

If you do have Internet access, here are instructions for obtaining
it from an archive server. You can obtain NeXTanswers via anonymous
ftp (file transfer protocol) from one of the following Internet
archive servers:
________________________________________________________
hostname IP address directory
________________________________________________________
sonata.cc.purdue.edu 128.210.15.30 pub/next/docs
cs.orst.edu 128.193.32.1 pub/next/documents/NeXTanswers

There is an ftp site in Japan for our Asian customers:
etlport.etl.go.jp 192.31.197.99 pub/NeXT/documents/NeXTanswers

There are two versions of NeXTanswers: a complete set, and a monthly
supplement for those who already have the previous month's complete
set. The former is called 91_winter_NeXTanswers.tar.Z and occupies
550K of disk space. The latter is called

	91_winter_NeXTanswers_Supplement.tar.Z,

occupies 137K, and contains files that are new or changed since the
June 1991 release. When the winter 1991 release is installed and
indexed, it occupies about 2.17 Mb.

To obtain NeXTanswers from an archive server, su to root in a shell
and type the commands list below. Replace "filename" with
"91_winter_NeXTanswers.tar.Z" or
"91_winter_NeXTanswers_Supplement.tar.Z", depending on whether you
want the complete set or the supplement.

The documentation (INSTALL.rtf, README.rtf, and CHANGES) is included
in a separate file called 91_winter_NeXTanswers_docs.tar.Z. This
file can go into the same directory where you place
91_winter_NeXTanswers.tar.Z.

        mkdirs /LocalLibrary/NeXTanswers
        cd /LocalLibrary/NeXTanswers
        ftp hostname-or-IP-address [see table above]
        [Login:] anonymous
[enter your own login name as the password]
ftp> cd directory [see table above for the directory name]
        ftp> binary
        ftp> get filename
        ftp> quit
zcat filename | tar -xvf -

This creates a subdirectory of /LocalLibrary/NeXTanswers called
91_winter. The documentation includes a file called INSTALL.rtf that
contains complete instructions on how to finish the installation, for
both the supplement and the complete set.

NOTE: The Winter 1991 NeXTanswers no longer contains entries
relating to the 1.0 software release.

VII. Project Gutenberg in the Wall Street Journal and on the net

Thanks to David at the University of Illinois for the following:

"A project called Project Gutenberg, which intends to put thousands
of electronic texts (books) on the Internet, was covered by CNN and
CBS this week. The server for this archive is mrcnext.cso.uiuc.edu,
which is a NeXT cube. I haven't seen the story, I just was there
when it was being taped. The CNN story was to have aired on Thurs.
night, and on Headline News on Friday. The CBS story will be taped
later this week and I don't know when it will be aired.

This publicity stems from a front-page WSJ article on the Project's
coordinator, Michael Hart (hart@vmd.cso.uiuc.edu).

I know they got several shots of Michael with the NeXT, ejecting
floppies from the CubeFloppy. :-) "

NeXTWORLD EXPO - JANUARY 1992

SAN FRANCISCO, October 28, 1991 -- NeXTWORLD Magazine, NeXT Computer,
Inc. and World Expo Corp. announced that the first international
NeXTWORLD Expo '92 will be held at the San Francisco Civic Auditorium
January 22 through 24, 1992. The combined user conference,
exposition, and developers conference is expected to draw more than
5,000 attendees, including professionals from corporate, government,
and educational organizations who participate in the purchase,
management, or development of NeXT hardware and software products.

"It's now becoming very clear that NeXT is going to be the
object-oriented computing standard of the 1990s," said Steven P.
Jobs, NeXT's president and CEO. "NeXTWORLD Expo will bring together
the highly talented members of the NeXT community for the first time,
and I expect some great things to happen at this event. NeXTWORLD
Expo will be a watershed event in the increasing success of NeXT."
Jobs will open the NeXTWORLD Expo with a keynote presentation
outlining future technology directions for NeXT, highlighting
software strategies for the decade ahead.

NeXTWORLD Expo '92 is being organized and managed by World Expo
Corp., a unit of International Data Group and one of the top event
organizers in the computer industry.

NeXTWORLD Magazine is sponsoring the two-day product exposition and
user conference, which will cover key NeXT technologies and markets.
Prominent speakers from NeXT, third-party developers, and user
organizations will participate in a series of panels and discussion
sessions on NeXT technology and market issues. The NeXT product
exposition will include up to 100 booths showcasing third-party
software and hardware products. NeXT will also sponsor several
hands-on sessions for publishing-oriented applications and for
NeXTstep application development.

The three-day developers conference, sponsored by NeXT, will provide
developers with information on future software technology and market
direction. In addition, the Bay Area NeXT Users Group will host a
one-day user group event for members of more than 240 NeXT user
groups. The meeting will be sponsored by NOIR, the international
NeXT user group organization.

Advanced registered attendance will be $25 for the exposition and
keynote sessions and $95 for the full user conference. The NeXT
developers conference, hosted by NeXT Computer, will cost $395. For
more information on registering, please call World Expo Corp. at
508-879-6700, ext. 450. Companies interested in exhibiting should
fax inquiries to World Expo Corp. at 508-872-8237.

NeXTWORLD EXPO MARKS TREMENDOUS GROWTH OF NeXT MARKET
The NeXTWORLD Expo event is being heralded as a "coming of age"
celebration for the NeXT platform. The NeXT market has grown
steadily due to increased customer interest in object-oriented
programming and the emergence of a market for professional
workstations.

Object-oriented programming has recently been recognized by industry
leaders as the key future direction for system software, and the
first real computer technology revolution since the emergence of
graphical user interfaces. The NeXT platform is built on
object-oriented technology and offers the only object-oriented system
software shipping today.

NeXT's customers are part of the business/professional workstation
segment, which accounted for 13 percent of the total workstation
market in 1990, according to IDC (International Data Corp.,
Framingham, MA). IDC anticipates sales in this category to double in
1991 and to reach 35 percent of the total workstation market by 1995.
This growth is creating tremendous opportunities for developers and
resellers of NeXT hardware and software.

EXPO SPONSORED BY NeXT, NeXTWORLD MAGAZINE AND WORLD EXPO CORP
World Expo Corp. is the leading producer of high-quality professional
events, exclusively for the information technology industry. World
Expo currently produces 58 events in 20 countries, including MacWORLD
Expo, Commnet, ObjectWORLD, SunWORLD Expo and PC Windows.

NeXTWORLD Magazine, published in San Francisco, is the comprehensive
source of news, reviews and information for users and prospective
buyers of NeXT computers. It publishes a quarterly magazine and a
monthly newsletter.

NeXT Computer, Inc., headquartered in Redwood City, Calif., designs,
manufactures, and markets professional workstations, which combine
the power and networking of today's most advanced workstations with
the ease of use and productivity applications of today's best
personal computers.

unique," said Mary Giunta, Wingz marketing manager. "We also support
NeXT's concept of Interpersonal Computing: to increase individual
and group productivity by improving people's ability to communicate
and exchange information and ideas, effectively and easily. We aim
to make the concept a reality to our customers."

"Wingz has long been the spreadsheet of choice for a number
of NeXT customers, and now these customers can take full advantage of
the capabilities of NeXTstep 2.0 in their Wingz applications," said
Donna Simonides, NeXT director of developer partnerships.

"Our customers will find the latest version of Wingz an
invaluable tool, not only for performing basic spreadsheet functions,
but also for incorporating spreadsheet data into graphical
presentations and into Executive Information Systems."

Wingz is the largest and most versatile graphic spreadsheet
software program available for all significant desktop operating
environments. Wingz features include advanced charting with 3-D
graphics, desktop presentation capabilities, and HyperScript, an
application development language.

Wingz and NeXTstep capabilities

With a connection to a fax modem, Wingz for NeXT users can
now click on a fax button directly on screen to fax any document or
graphic directly from within the application.

Wingz and NeXTstep 2.0 also gives users the ability to
incorporate color easily and intuitively into Wingz applications by
using either NeXTstation Color, NeXT's 16-bit color PostScript
computer, or NeXTdimension, NeXT's high-end, 32-bit color PostScript
system.

Another added feature for Wingz users is NeXT's 3.5" floppy
drive support which allows storage of up to 2.88 MB of data, twice
the amount of existing 1.44 MB drives.

Wingz is currently available for major graphical desktop
environments including the Macintosh, Windows 3.0 for DOS, OS/2
Presentation Manager, OPEN LOOK for Sun workstations, and OSF/MOTIF
for UNIX-based platforms. Wingz 1.1a for NeXT has a suggested retail

III. OPTO-TECH releases ScanExt for the NeXT

OPTO-TECH releases ScanExt
Scan Software Package for OPTOSCAN and Rollei Digital ScanPack

Penzberg, Germany - November 18, 1991 - OPTO-TECH GmbH, a German
based Scanner manufacturer today introduced ScanExt, a software
package, that permits NeXT NeXTdimension and NeXTstation Color users
to make use of OPTO-TECH`s high end desktop reproscanners and the
sensational Rollei Digital ScanPack, a high resolution scanner hooked
to the back of a Rolleiflex professional photocamera. ScanExt,
OPTOSCAN and Digital ScanPack will be demonstrated at the NeXTWorld
Exposition held in San Francisco, California, January 21 - 23, 1992.

OPTO-TECH, established 1987 in the German city of Hannover, is
dedicated to linking classic German High-performance areas like
optics and precision mechanical engineering with innovative high
technology. Two samples of these development efforts are OPTOSCAN
integral and - in cooperation with Rollei, a renouned German Camera
manufacturer - Rollei digital ScanPack. OPTOSCAN is a professional
overhead reproscanner with ultra high, yet adaptive resolution of 36
million pixels (5000 dpi for 35 mm slides, 600 dpi for letter size
originals). Images - transparencies as well as reflectives and even
3D objects - are captured with 10 bits per color (RGB), resulting in
accurate color reproduction. The scanner comes on a sturdy stand,
resembling a conventional vertical repro camera complete with light
box for transparencies and repro lamps for reflective art and 3D.
Autofocus and automatic resolution control ensure ease of use.

Rollei Digital ScanPack uses the same technology but is adapted to
the back of a professional 2 1/4" photocamera, the Rolleiflex 6000
series. This allows for highest flexibility in electronic
photography. Product shots can be made, omitting film and chemicals,
directly into the computer. This saves time and money and the
photographer is able to control all production steps.

ScanExt is the first software package available on NeXT Color
workstations that allows use of a professional desktop scanner. "We
believe in the future of these powerful workstations" says Karl Koch,
Marketing Manager of OPTO-TECH, "that`s why we made the effort to
have this software developed. We foresee a high demand in scanning
and color reproduction on NeXT computers in the near future and we
provide an easy and cost effective way."

OPTOSCAN, Rollei Digital ScanPack and ScanExt are available from
OPTO-TECH, Grube 21, 8122 Penzberg, Germany and more than 15
distributors worldwide. Suggested retail price for OPTOSCAN and
ScanExt is approx. [...], for Digital ScanPack and ScanExt
approx. [...] not including Rolleiflex cameras or lenses.

OPTOSCAN, OPTOSCAN integral and ScanExt are trademarks of OPTO-TECH
GmbH, Digital ScanPack is a trademark of Rollei Fototechnic GmbH,
NeXT, NeXTstation and NeXTdimension are trademarks of NeXT Computer,
Inc.

V. NeXT machine passes Minnesota Winter Test

Mike Tie at Carlton College phoned NeXT last week to order a new
keyboard. It seems there was a major snowstorm that knocked down a
tree and broke a window, consequently completely covering a NeXT cube in his
lab with snow. When he arrived Monday and dug the cube out, the temperature
was 15 below 0 degrees Fahrenheit and the cube was still on....the keyboard
was a little soggy, but he thinks it will work when he drys it out.

XI. Announcing three new products from RightBrain Software

   i. RightBrain Rulers Product Information

RightBrain Rulers are a must for anyone who writes memos, creates
documents, builds presentations, produces graphic designs or draws
using NeXT? computers. They are horizontal and vertical rulers that
float above any application and are ideally suited for lining up
objects, confirming image sizes, centering graphics and impressing
friends.

RightBrain Rulers feature an intuitive interface you'd expect in a
product from RightBrain Software . They move and resize just like
windows. The three visible buttons on RightBrain Rulers allow you to
quickly change the orientation and behavior of each ruler. Click on
the black triangle to flip the rulers over, click the 0-point button
to move the origin to left, right or center, or click on the parallel
arrows to lock the rulers together so that they move together like a
T-square. RightBrain Rulers are easily lengthened or shortened to
meet the needs of any situation.

Floating Rulers
Because they float over applications rather than reside in them,
RightBrain Rulers can be used to compare object sizes and positions
across multiple documents, or across multiple pages within one
document. You can use them to align text blocks in FrameMaker or
position graphics in Adobe Illustrator. They're great for measuring
image sizes in WordPerfect , and positioning symbols in Diagram! If
you need to zoom in on an image and want to accurately measure its
position or size, RightBrain Rulers can be zoomed to the same level
so that the measurements match those for your image. Whether you need
to work in inches, picas, centimeters or points, RightBrain Rulers
make the job easier.

Features
   - RightBrain Rulers float over all applications, which means you
can work between documents or across multiple pages.
   - Several unit-systems are available, including inches,
     centimeters, picas and points.
   - Alignment can be set flush-left, flush-right or centered.
   - RightBrain Rulers can be lengthened, shortened, flipped or
     scaled.
   - Launch more than one copy to give you more than one pair of
     RightBrain Rulers.

System Requirements
NeXTstep system software 2.0 or higher
1.44 MB floppy disk drive

   ii. RightBrain's Portfolio

Portfolio is a scrolling palette for TIFF and EPS images that keeps
graphics at your fingertips for inclusion in other documents. You can
drag files directly from the palette into any application that
supports drag and drop of image files, including PasteUp, Virtuoso,
FrameMaker, WordPerfect, NeXT's Mail application, WriteNow and
many others.

Drag and Drop Images
Just drag an image file into the Portfolio window, and it is
instantly rendered as a 1.25" x 1.25" miniature. You can then find
the image you need visually instead of having to remember the name of
the file-and you can drag the image directly from the Portfolio
window into other applications.

Portfolio supports TIFF, EPS, PS, AI, and TYPE document types, and
can support any other document type that uses PostScript as its
native file format.

Visual Selection
Portfolio uses a small, scrolling window so you don't lose sight of
the document that you're working on while locating graphics to
import. Portfolio also uses a visual selection metaphor that is
superior to searching directories and remembering file names.
Portfolio is an excellent mechanism for sharing sets of image files
within a workgroup, keeping the corporate logo at your fingertips,
and always having the latest version of shared graphics and images.

Inspector Window
The Inspector window lets you see a full-scale representation of the
image, and provides information about the image file including its
dimensions, the file name and full path name for the image, the date
and time of last modification, and the file's icon.

Features
Display images visually in "thumbnail" form.
Drag and drop images from Portfolio into any application.
Inspector window to see file attributes and full-scale image.
Scrolling window can be resized to save screen space.
Move files up and down in the scrolling list.
Double-click files to open them directly.

   iii. RightBrain's LaunchPad

LaunchPad is a NeXT dock extender that allows users to add
application icons to their Dock without taking up additional screen
space, auto-launch more applications than will fit in the Dock, and
create a personal storage area that keeps selected applications and
documents within easy reach. LaunchPad features an intuitive NeXTstep
interface with scrolling application icons.

Extended Dock Space
LaunchPad has all the advantages of the Dock, but it is infinitely
extendable, effectively increasing the number of items you can keep
in your Dock from ten to hundreds.

Auto-launch Applications
LaunchPad auto-launches selected applications and documents when you
log in, and can be set to open a suite of applications or documents
at any time. Just check the boxes to select the icons you want opened
automatically, then do other things while LaunchPad is launching
applications and opening documents. Resize the window to see the file
names and directories for each item stored in LaunchPad (not shown).

Special-Purpose Dock
LaunchPad can be used to keep a collection of extra applications at
your fingertips for easy access. With LaunchPad, you can keep
important files and applications in one convenient place, thus
eliminating the need to search through a tangle of folders when
assembling applications and documents for a specific task. Each file
can actually be in a different directory; the files are simply
collected into a convenient form in the LaunchPad window. LaunchPad
stores links to the files, so you're not using up valuable disk space
with copies of all the applications and files.

Features
      - Extend the number of applications that can be auto-launched
        from the Dock.
      - View files and applications by their icons, not just cryptic
        names.
      - Drag files and applications into LaunchPad directly from the
Workspace, Mail, or any application that supports drag and
        drop of icons.
      - Double-click anything in LaunchPad to launch an application
        or open a file.
      - Group applications and documents that you always use together
into one icon, and launch them together by double-clicking.
      - Intuitive NeXTstep interface with scrolling application
        icons.
      - On-line manual and free technical support.

System Requirements

I. Executor-MSW ships Dec. 23 (Read & Write Macintosh disks, run Microsoft Word)

From: Clifford Matthew at Abacus
Email: iclone!ctm@unmvax.cs.unm.edu

Greetings people interested in Macintosh Compatibility

After five years of development plus beta testing, gnashing of teeth,
bug fixing, more gnashing and more testing, it looks like Executor-MSW
and HFS_XFer will be ready to ship on December 23rd, 1991. There is still
a little beta testing going on as you read this, but unless a real showstopper
is found, we will be able to begin shipping two days before Christmas. I
claim this makes Executor-MSW and HFS_XFer a perfect stocking stuffer, but
I'm biased. What is Executor-MSW?

Executor-MSW is a program that allows you to run the Macintosh version of
Microsoft(MS) Word 4.00D on your NeXT computer. You must own a copy of MS Word
4.00D in order to use it; Microsoft Word 4.00D does not come with Executor-MSW.
Executor-MSW is actually a full-blown Macintosh emulator, except we have
prioritized the bug fixing and fixed all the bugs pertaining to Microsoft Word
4.00D so that we can sell this version now to people who want it.
If you're not planning on running Word, you probably don't want
to buy this version unless you're purchasing it for HFS_XFer or you
just think we deserve your or your company's money on principle.

     What doesn't Executor-MSW do?

Reverse engineering the Macintosh is a difficult task. There are
some pieces of the software yet to do. Executor-MSW reflects this
by having the following limitations: No Printing, No Color, No Sound,
No System 7, No AppleTalk, No Desk Accessories and No Script Manager
(i.e. no non-US localizations). On the other hand, Executor-MSW does
work nicely in the NeXT environment, allowing the use of services and
cut and paste of ascii and Rich Text between Executor-MSW and other
NeXTstep applications. Because lack of printing is such a glaring
problem, if you buy this version of Executor-MSW, you will automatically
be entitled to a free upgrade to the first version that supports printing.

     What is HFS_XFer?

HFS_XFer allows you to transfer files between HFS (Hierarchical Filesystem)
Macintosh disks and the NeXT, where they're stored in Apple Double format.
This allows you to copy files to the NeXT and later back to a Macintosh
floppy without having to worry about reassembling the "resource fork".
Naturally HFS_XFer and Executor-MSW work well together. HFS_XFer is
what you use to load your copy of Microsoft Word onto your NeXT in the
first place, but it's good for much more than that because you can use it to
transfer any information on a Macintosh disk to your NeXT, and vice-versa.

     What doesn't HFS_XFer do?

HFS only allows you to copy one floppy at a time, so if you have
more than one floppy drive you still have to use your disk as a buffer if
you want to copy from one floppy drive to the other. The extensions to
HFS that were introduced with System 7 are not supported and the files are
transferred over directly without any translation in between. HFS_XFer
works only with floppies, not with hard drives.

     How can I order?

Right now ARDI accepts checks and money orders. Orders paid for
by a personal check may be delayed until the check clears. Orders paid for
by a company check or a money order will be filled immediately, starting
December 23rd. We hope to be able to accept Visa and MasterCard
and Purchase Orders by mid January. Executor-MSW and HFS_XFer are
bundled together. For pricing call the phone number below:

                Executor-MSW
                Abacus R&D, Inc.
                1650 University Blvd., NE
                Albuquerque, NM 87102
                Phone: (505) 766-9115

Our special offer before New Years is that any orders that
are received by an express mail service (e.g. Federal Express) will be
sent out by an equivalent express mail service at no extra cost, but
remember, we don't start shipping until the 23rd of December.

		Thank you,

IV. Message from CompuServe NeXT Forum

Here are some details of CompuServe's NeXT Forum as one
of the sources of public domain NeXT software.

This message is from one of the sysops, Paul Lynch:

We have around 30 Mb of software in our libraries available
for downloading. NeXTforum is accessible by anyone with a modem,
unlike the ftp addresses of most of the NeXT archive sites.

      There are over 200 libraries:

          1 Recreation
          2 NeXT/Misc Info
          3 Connectivity
          4 Utilities
          5 Applications
          6 Hardware/Peripheral
          7 Programming
          8 Sound
          9 Graphics

We keep a current selection of NeXTanswers, FAQ and Miniexamples,
as well as press releases, newletters, games, utilities and
      demonstration versions of software.

      Thanks,
      Paul Lynch

VIII. UIGuide available on Purdue Archive Server

NeXTstep User Interface Guide

The file, UIGuide.tar.Z, contains a draft version of the user interface
(UI) guidelines for NeXTstep applications. This draft is based on Chapter
2 of the "NeXTstep Concepts" manual, but has been updated to include the new
guidelines and other changes for 2.0. It has also been reorganized to be
clearer about what parts of the UI a designer or developer must worry
about, as opposed to the parts that are available "for free" from
the Application Kit and Interface Builder. Some new information has been
added, such as how to choose the most appropriate control.

We in NeXT Publications have two goals in releasing drafts of documentation
through archive sites. First, this method allows us to distribute
information to you in a more timely manner, shortcutting some of the
editorial and production time that would otherwise be required before
release. (This implies, however, that these documents will be less
polished than they would be in a normal release-- we ask your indulgence.)
Second, we hope to receive feedback that will help us improve the
documentation before it's released in its final form.

If you have suggestions or bug reports relating to this guide, please send
me email at kathy_walrath@next.com. If you have comments, suggestions, or bug
reports about other documentation, Interface Builder, the Application Kit,
or other aspects of NeXTstep, please direct them to bug_next@next.com.

Thanks,
Kathy Walrath
