30JUN04 - The HVTERMTT.ZIP HVTerminal TrueType Font Package
===============================================================

---------------------------------------------------------------
The ZIP archive should contain the following files:-
---------------------------------------------------------------

FONTHELP.TXT - Installing Windows' fonts - and web links to
                  information on fonts
   TERMTTFS.REG - A Windows NT/2000/XP Registry File
   ------------------------------------------------------------
. . . and several versions of the HVFont in TrueType format
   ------------------------------------------------------------
HVTERM.TTF - HVTerminal - the Normal version of the font
   HVTERML.TTF - HVTerminal Light - a less bold version
HVTERMN.TTF - HVTerminal Narrow - 80% of the "Normal" width

font files with a .TT_ extension. These are identical to
the .TTF files except that the space character (ASCII 32)
   is blank.

Windows Terminal fonts - Raster or TrueType?
---------------------------------------------------------------

These TrueType fonts will install under ANY version of Windows
but are designed to be used under Windows NT/2000/XP.

Windows 95/98/Me uses ONLY raster (bitmap) fonts in terminals
or "DOS Boxes".

Windows NT/2000/XP also uses raster fonts. However, it can also
use SOME TrueType fonts. (They must be in a special format -
"Lucida Console" is one common Windows' TrueType font of this
type.)

If you are running Windows 95/98/Me - or prefer raster fonts -
you should use the HVDOSBox fonts. They provide a general
solution to the problem of terminal window sizing and font
clarity. (see http://www.procon.com.au/HVDOSBox.htm for more
details.)

---------------------------------------------------------------
To install these Windows TrueType Terminal fonts
---------------------------------------------------------------

1. UNZIP the archive into a working directory. (NEVER use the
Windows' font directory as a working directory).

2. Go to Control Panel, select the Fonts applet, and select
View, Details, to see Font Names and Filenames.

3. If you are installing the licenced version, first REMOVE any
evaluation fonts previously installed. To do this:-
Select the fonts "HVTerminal - Evaluation", etc.
Right Click for a Context Menu and select Delete,
Confirm the request to remove the font(s).

4. While in the Fonts applet, select File, Install New Font.
Navigate to the working directory and select and install the
   "HVTerminal" etc., TrueType font(s).

---------------------------------------------------------------
To add the HVTerminal fonts to the Windows Terminal font list
---------------------------------------------------------------

The Windows' Registry maintains a list of installed TrueType
fonts available to Terminal Windows.

To see what terminal fonts are available:-
  Run a Terminal window
Right Click on the Title Bar Keyboard: <Alt><Spacebar>
  Select Properties Keyboard: <P>
Select the Font tab Keyboard: <Ctrl><Tab>
A font list appears in a Combobox.

In most "standard" Windows XP installations the only TrueType font
shown may be "Lucida Console".

After you install additional terminal compatible fonts - like
the HVTerminal set - the Windows Registry must be updated to
add these fonts to its internal list.

You can do this by using the Registry Editor as explained in
the Microsoft article:-
"Necessary Criteria for Fonts to Be Available in a Command Window"
  at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q247815

Alternatively, if you currently only have ONE TrueType font
available in Terminal mode, you may be able to use the enclosed
Registry file TERMTTFS.REG to add the required entries.

To do this:-
  Run Explorer
Right Click on the file TERMTTFS.REG
  Select Merge.

The necessary entries for the HVTerminal, etc., fonts will be
added to the Registry.

NOTE: You MUST REBOOT Windows after editing or modifying the registry
to ensure the new entries are CORRECTLY recognized!

To select a different terminal font or font size:-
  Run the Terminal window
Right Click on the Title Bar Keyboard: <Alt><Spacebar>
  Select Properties Keyboard: <P>
Select the Font tab Keyboard: <Ctrl><Tab>
Focus to Font Combobox Keyboard: <Alt><F>
Select "HVTerminal", etc Keyboard: <Up> and <Down>
Focus to Font Size Combobox Keyboard: <Alt><S>
Select a Point Size Keyboard: <Up> and <Down> or Value
(Point sizes not on the list must be keyed in)
  Click OK Keyboard: <Enter>
Select "Save properties ..." Keyboard: <Alt><S>
  Click OK Keyboard: <Enter>

A terminal window is easier to work with if it sized so that
scrolling - particularly horizontal scrolling - is not
required. To do this, choose a font type (Normal, Narrow, Wide,
etc.) and point size that ensures that the terminal window is
completely within the physical screen. Then maximise the
terminal window.

To maximise the window:-
Right Click on the Title Bar Keyboard: <Alt><Spacebar>
  Select Maximize Keyboard: <X>

---------------------------------------------------------------
HVTerminal Font Specification
---------------------------------------------------------------

The HVTerminal family of fonts all use the HVFont variation of
the MS-DOS "OEM" Character set - sometimes called PC-8 or the
CodePage 437 character set.

The fonts are monospaced ("fixed pitch"), and are classified as
"Sans Serif" in the "Modern" font family.

The HVFont character glyphs have been specially modified to
produce a highly legible screen font, ideally suited to text
and source code editors.

The HVTerminal TrueType fonts use the normal HVFont design
philosophy (see http://www.procon.com.au/HVFont.htm) and -
unlike most TrueType fonts - include the control characters
(ASCII 0-31). The binary NUL (ASCII 0) is not boxed.

---------------------------------------------------------------
LICENCED version: Using the alternative fonts
---------------------------------------------------------------

The LICENCED package contains a set of font files with a .TT_
extension. These are identical to the .TTF files except that
the space character (ASCII 32) is blank. These can be used as
an alternative to the standard files if you do not want the
"dotted grid" effect.

To use the alternative font files.

1. Copy the .TT_ files to a DIFFERENT working directory from
that containing the standard .TTF files.

2. Rename the files so that the extension is TTF. You can do
this from a command line by typing
     REN HVTERM*.TT_ *.TTF

3. Go to Control Panel, select the Fonts applet, and select
View, Details, to see Font Names and Filenames.

4. If you have previously installed the evaluation fonts or the
standard font set, REMOVE them. To do this:-

     Select the fonts "HVTerminal", etc.
Right Click for a Context Menu and select Delete,
Confirm the request to remove the font(s).

5. While in the Fonts applet, select File, Install New Font.
Navigate to the directory containing the renamed font files
and select and install the font(s).

---------------------------------------------------------------
EVALUATION version
---------------------------------------------------------------

The EVALUATION versions of the fonts show hollow boxes in
place of some alphabetic characters.

They also use the blank space character - so do not show the
dotted grid effect. (If you wish to see what the dotted space
looks like, download and examine the HVEdit evaluation package.
While the HVEdit font CANNOT be used in a terminal window it
can be used in any Window's editor or word processor.)
