Subject: What has happened to The KBI Journal?

Does anyone know if "The Kite Builders International Journal" is still
published? I started subscribing more than a year ago and so far I have
only received: vol. 2, issue 2 (Fall/Winter 1994).
I have e-mailed them several times without reply, both on:
kbi.ferrl@fast.net, and the old address kbi.ferrel@microserve.com

Good question - At least I have recieved two copies - but the last one must
have been 6-9 months ago.

I too have wondered and when I recently placed an order with Steve I asked.
I have not received a Journal since well before the Smithsonian in late March.
He said that his time was consumed with his new catalog offering and that
KBI Journal was next ... It's been a month an a half since I ordered that
50yd bagrain package ( which was a pretty good deal ) . No journal yet.

So lets hope Steve gets back to the KBI Journal promise. It was a good idea.
Kite makers don't have much of a forum outside of rec.kites ( that I know of )

So far, that's the only one I have received too. I spoke to Steve
Ferrel and he said that things have been hectic for him with the
production of his catalog. This is understandable, however our $20
membership should include 4 newsletters per year. Maybe we should
request that our memberships be extended to make up for it!!??

As a subscriber and contributor to KBI journal I'm in the same
boat as youz guys. Shoot, it's been weel over a year
since I have received anything. I remember it was before
the '95 Smithsonian thang !

Steve mentioned the catalog QUITE some time back and it's
been out in it's current form for a GOOD while. Ya gotta
wonder if it [ KBIJ ] was just more than he could handle.
You know how easy it is to get yourself all keyed up
for a thang and then it smoothers you.
Kinda like e-mail and the "news" .

I gotta think if he kept the editorial stuff to a min and
required contributers to furnish "copy" in MS Word format
on floppy then the work load would be cut WAY back
to a more managable level.

Frankly I'd accept a much lower level of quality than
Steve had achieved.

Just MHO

Graeme, Bob, and all the other KBI members out there:
Yes there still is a KBI and no, there has not been any journals published
since volume 2, number 2.

I originally thought that handling the store and writing the journal would
not be a problem. However, now I find that it is. Kite Studio has grown
a lot in the past five years - if I look back, It has probably grown
faster and larger than any of us had originally expected. We now devote
over 2,300 square feet to Kite Studio and it keeps me and the old man very
busy. Dad thought he would have lots of free time when he retired but I
think he is busier now - at least he is happier. There have not been many
days this year that I have worked less than 12 -14 hours. I don't want to
sit and type excuses but it has been busy. The past year was also a very
difficult time for me - personally. I experienced some personal problems
that I did not expect and am still not totally recovered from.

Not being able to publish the journal really does eat at me because I
still believe that it is a needed publication - it seems I get phone calls
daily from beginner kite builders with questions about how to build that
first stunt kite. There is a thirst for knowledge as is evident in this
newsgroup - but not everyone has the ability (or willingness) to log on.
The basic goal of KBI - to share information and to keep people from
reinventing the wheel is still a valid goal.

Do not get the impression than this is a fairwell posting to KBI. I have
full intentions of getting the journals out. Everyone is still an active
member. The policy was and is that a KBI membership would include four
issues of the Journal. Not neccessarily in one year - but I hope to get to
that schedule. I currently have an issue just about ready to let loose -
but I have been hesitating because I don't want to experience another
delay between issues. When I feel that I can honestly produce on an
ongoing basis, the journals will come out.

If I am so busy how will I accomplish this? Well, I am training new
people to handle some of my Kite Studio duties, and I am enteraining the
thought of having someone help in the publication - any takers? I prefer
to have someone within my local area. Many have also expressed the desire
for smaller journals and more of them. Maybe It's me or the perfectionist
in me or maybe it's just my thick head that wants to try and keep it at 20
pages. I originally wanted to make something new and big - something I
could be proud of (there are many people who feel the same about their
kites), and something unlike any other newsletter out there. Maybe I
should rethink that ideal.

Anyway, I apologize for the silence. I really do want to get KBI alive.
If anyone has questions, concerns, or ideas - please don't hesitate to
call.

Steve

Well, I got more or less the same answer from KBI when I e-mailed them
last Fall, though at that time said he was working on the next issue.
