Subject: Parafoil won't fly

A few years agoI purchased a small Parafoil kite as something to carry
around hiking and cross-country skiing.

Unfortunately I have only managed to get it to fly nicely once.

The symptom is that it doesn't really want to rise, and continues to
dive to the right, especially when the wind gusts. It also seems to
need quite a lot of wind to fly in the first place.

I have fiddled with the relative lengths of the 3 strings (2 to the
edges and 1 to the keel) and managed to get it right once - but lost
it again some time later. The correct settings appear to be totally
dependent on the wind strength.

Can anyone please suggest possible solutions and/or explain the
effects of changing the relative lengths of the strings.

Any help appreciated - either in the newsgroup where it may benefit
others, or to my private email address.

Thanks & Regards

I also ordered a Parafoil-5 and it exhibits some of the same problems. It
has a real hard time lifting. I haven't had success in adjusting the
bridle lengths.

When all else fails add a tail.

I have flown my parafoil in half a dozen different states and provinces. When
I have a brisk wind I add up to twenty feet of 1 1/2 inch ribbon or surveying
flagging. Sometimes I double or tripple it as well. I have also used my
parafoil to pull me and my wife in a canoe accross a large lake.

Good luck

True, the few times I have managed to keep the kite straight has been
when I have hung the kite bag off the tail and tuned it by filling it
with beach sand!

Trouble is that by the time the kite stays straight, it is almost too
heavy to rise.
