Erez has made a good trade off in the new IIP. He has increased the weight slightly, made the I.D. a little smaller and increased the robustness of the spar a lot. It is still light enough for indoor usage but rugged enough to work in higher winds. My estimate is that it will perform up to 10 mph on a 64 inch leading edge kite. I will try it at the first opportunity. I think this will be a popular spar for ultra light kites. Erez also said Bert Tanaka has some of these same spars and has flown them in one of his kites. How about a report Bert? I also tested the new SkyShark tapered spars. I don't quite know what the best way to characterise tapered spars is yet. I finally tested them by using a two foot span that I use for all other spars and slid the spar both to the thick side and then to the thin side and averaged the two readings. They are surprisingly light for their stifness. They are the same stiffness as the the Advantage 250/4 wrap spar but almost half as heavy. With a straight center section these should make some outstanding Rev I and custom size Rev kite main spars. They would also be pretty good for standard size dual line kites in the wind speed range of 4 mph and up. I told Erez I would like the spars better if they were not sanded and coated. Sanding weakens them and coating is just unnecessary weight. I have added these spars to my spar chart that will be on my www home page when it is finished. But for now I am headed for Baja Mexico then Ivanpaugh on the way home. I had the oppertunity off testing a 17.5 gramspar, one of the toughest spars I ever held in my hands holding 4.7 kg at 70 cm. (according to the Simo Salanne beer-can-method). I understand there is a 15 and 13 gram version around as well. Do you now anything about how this translates into 'wraps' or ply's, does a 15 gram tapered spar correspond with a 5-ply Skyshark ? Anyway wish I was going to Ivanpah as well, cheers, NOP = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Mon, 13 Feb 1995 11:40:13 -1000 From: salanne@convex.csc.FI (Simo Salanne) Message-Id: <3hojjt$e2o@pobox.csc.fi> Organization: STACK Finland Subject: Re: New SkyShark Spars In nop@euronet.nl (Nop_Velthuizen) writes: >I am similarly impressed by the new IIP's, looking forward to putting 100cm >versions in a 2 mtr leading edge of a magnum OPUS (Ultra light SUMO's) >Concerning tapered SKYSHARK spars, I am under the impression that Erez has >given out several different versions. If spar technology makes progress like this, breweries have to respond with bigger cans!
