I like the way white looks, and I like putting it into my kites, but I'm finally beginning to get a bit tired of white and red and white and black and white and blue kites. Has anybody played around with dyeing fabric? Does the Kool-Aid dyeing work well? Does any kind of dye really work well? How about painting fabric? I'd like to try making my own simple print fabric -- perhaps a rokkaku with little tiny rokkakus all over it (or maybe not, ugh). Any handy hints? I've seen articles in KiteLines over the last couple of years on this, but I don't know anybody who has experimented with it (other than the folks who do tie-die, and they use Egyptian cotton fabric, which isn't any good to me, since I've got this mountain of ripstop). She used acid dyes (the type of dye appropriate for nylon), which need to be set by steam. (Dyes bond with the fiber, paints/pigments sit on the surface -- to maintain the translucency of ripstop you want to use dyes.) : >Any handy hints? I haven't done any dyeing, either with kool-aid or the acid dyes so can't offer any hints, but I do have a videotape of most of Anne's workshop. I'd consider making one copy for rec.kites. : The best bet is to contact the folks who wrote the articles. I've : found most kite people easy to talk with...
