The creature doesn't like light.  You may have noticed that it tries
to hide in a crack.  If the crack were illuminated (say by some light
source ending up in it), it might be easier to catch.

Catching it will be the first step in solving what, IMHO, is the
hardest and best puzzle of a truly classic game.

Sorry I can't answer your other question;  it's been so long since I
played it that I don't remember what to do on the island.  The dolphin
can help you get the coconut, if I'm not mistaken.
