Spoilers ho!

Three of the four puzzles you've listed are tied to a single problem.
The fourth (getting past the guard in Belwit Square) is a red herring.

The problem involves the 'mysterious exit' from each cube. This is
arguably the hardest single puzzle in all of Infocom's games.

All of the impassable exits lead to the same place.

More accurately, all of the impassable exits lead to the same *object*.

You can't pass through the exit while carrying the object.

Try dropping your inventory and casting JINDAK. See any objects (other
than the cubes) with a magical aura?

The gold box is magical, and it interacts with the cubes. Try putting
a cube at random (say, the "air" cube) into the box, and notice the
effects.

Try dropping the gold box somewhere, then BLORPLE the "air" cube.

Try *throwing* the gold box somewhere.

Throw the gold box onto the lava shelf, then BLORPLE the "air" cube and
walk through the formerly impassable exit. Good luck!
