		MicroWalt W-NEWS News Package 3.00
		=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

How To Install W-NEWS:

1. Unpack this archive and read the documentation. Also, check the
'wnews.h' file for customization of the defines. The 'Makefile' also
contains some definitions, mainly compiler types.

2. Type 'make install'.
All programs will now be compiled. Note, that you need one of the new
Stdio(3) packages for the 'inews' program, since it uses the 'r+' (read
and update) flag with fopen(3). Define HAVE_ESTD in "wnews.h" to 1 if
your library cannot handle the 'r+' operator; otherwise set it to 0.

3. All W-NEWS files will have been installed in LIBDIR, and some control
directories will have been created in SPOOLDIR. Check if the owners of
those files are indeed 'news.news' (as defined in "Install.sh").

4. Edit the 'active' file in LIBDIR, and create and/or delete any subdirec-
tories under SPOOLDIR. Usually, newsgroups are stored as files in sub-
    directories:

	article 267 in comp.os.minix :

		/usr/spool/news/comp/os/minix/267
				^^^^^^^^^^^^^
				  The newsgroup

You can find a list of directories to be created in DIRLIST, after the
installation procedure has finished its work.

5. Fetch, compile and install one or more newsreaders.
W-NEWS will soon have its own full-screen news reader, but, for now,
use the "vn" program. It works great on MINIX.

6. Add a line to /usr/lib/crontab, which automatically executes the
'rnews -U' program at certain time intervals. I have an entry like:

	0 10 * * * /usr/bin/rnews -U
	59 0 * * * /usr/lib/news/sendbatch -c minixug

which runs 'rnews -U' daily at 10:00 AM , and 'sendbatch' at 00:59 AM
every day. The latter command creates news batches for system 'minixug',
    which is my MUGNET host.

7. Set up a news feed with a site nearby, and try to exchange some
    articles. It should work OK.

Well, that's it for now.
This piece of software performs OK on my "uwalt" machine (which is a 25MHz
286/NEAT running NLMUG Advanced MINIX 1.5.10E-PC/286), so it should run on
almost any MINIX system. If you have trouble installing or using it, or if
you want to add some features to it, please let me know. In the latter
case, I would like to be the 'clearing office' which issues new versions at
regular intervals.

Enjoy!
