.IP "Raster "
The "Output Type" toggles between "vector" and "raster". When the Output Type
is set to "raster", Xprism2 simply sends a screen dump of the workspace
directly to "vlaser"; in this case, the Imagen pane of the Output subform
may be considered simply to be a convenient user interface to "vlaser".
If desired, one might replicate the operation of this pane WITH RASTER OUTPUT
by saving the xprism workspace as a screen dump (see the help provided on the
"Files" pane of the Output subform), and then sending the screen dump to the
imagen printer using the Khoros routine,"vlaser".
NOTE: IF YOU ARE USING OVERLAYS, YOU MUST USE RASTER OUTPUT.

.IP "Vector"
Vector Output may also be referred to as "Quality Output" - certain operations
are done so that the plot that is printed out will have smoother lines and a
clearer rendering than is possible on the display. In general, vector output
is always the method of choice. Text and fonts look far superior with vector
output, lines are smooth, and the graphics workspace in general looks more
refined on paper than it can on the screen. However, since it is one of the
newest features of xprism2, vector output in ImPRESS still has some limitations:
.br
a) LINE TYPES have not been implemented yet - all line types will look SOLID.
.br
b) MARKER TYPE CIRCLE may not come out.
.br
c) MESH PLOTS on ImPRESS do not come out nicely, as ImPRESS has no way to
represent a polygon -- all there is to work with are squares and rectangles.
.br
d) ANNOTATIONS have not yet been implemented with vector output - they cannot
be output with vector at all.

Output to Printer vs. Output to File

If one wishes to send the xprism workspace directly to an available imagen
printer, fill in the "Printer" parameter box with the name of your local
imagen printer. When the user hits return, the
workspace will be sent straight to the specified printer.
On the other hand, one may not have direct access to a imagen printer, but
desire to use one on another system, for example. To do this, one might first
fill in the "Filename" parameter box with the name of a file to save the
workspace in. When the user hits return, the workspace is saved
in the named file. This file may then be ftp'ed,
mailed, etc. to the computer which is connected to the desired imagen
printer, and then sent to that printer with a simple "lpr " command.
