Because I would like the keybindings to synch where we can.  It's
certainly easy in this case.  I'd like Emacs users to feel at home
with XEmacs keybindings, and vice cersa.  Also, the change seems
logical, but I wanted to ask what our beta testers think about it
first.

No; synching with Emacs in such matters is a perfectly normal thing.
At least that's what has been done for ages.

The `*'-prefixed bindings have nothing to do with `m' and `u'; they
are prefix to the commands that operate on marks.  `m' and `u' assign
(and deassign) them.
