Recall that right now, bugs reported on 19.14 sometimes require
tracking down in 3 different versions :-(.

The main point of further v19 releases at this point is to give people
unwilling or unready to upgrade a chance to continue using XEmacs
while we get v20 completely stable. In many respects, the stablest
version of XEmacs we have right now is 20.0-latin-1. There have been
many fixes made to it that haven't been propagated into 19.15. But it
has been pointed out that many people will be frightened away from a
first release of any major upgrade.

O.K.

Vinnie> 2) Fix all the bugs that users report. Remember I offered to

That's a good idea, though officially sanctioned patches have less
force when many users are using binary distributions.

Vinnie> 3) This should give you time to:
Vinnie> a) make sure that all the fixes/enhancements/improvements in
Vinnie> 19.15 have made it to 20.0

There aren't any. Since 19.14 all work has basically been done on v20
first, and with Chuck's bad summer, much of it didn't get into 19.15.
The work I did with 19.15 has been merged, as nearly all of it was
Lisp synch ups with Emacs 19.34.

Vinnie> b) complete the performance work which is probably necessary
Vinnie> for 20.0.

The benchmarks show 20.0-latin-1 is roughly the same speed as 19.14
and 19.15.

Vinnie> In general, the idea of making 2 simultaneous releases is bad
Vinnie> because it will confuse users and dilute our resources.

I agree with that. But we want to get people moved up to v20 as soon
as we can. At some point there's going to be a simultaneous release,
unless we hold v20 until the summer or beyond, and I don't think
that's really necessary or desirable. 20.0 with mule is as stable or
stabler than 19.14 was. 20.0-latin-1 is stabler.

Vinnie> If you really want to release 20.0 now, then you should not
Vinnie> release 19.15, but I think this would be a bad idea.

Yes, that wouldn't make much sense.

The major point I think you're missing is that since 19.14 only one of
the two source trees has been maintained and worked on -- the v20
source tree.
