I used to do this until people started attempting to move my binary
elsewhere (like their home machines).  Nothing more annoying than
bringing home 40MB of stuff only to find that you forgot to copy some
stupid library from elsewhere in the filesystem namespace.

Static linking on these non-standard libs is a labour savings.
