It's necessary to support the default *scratch* buffer mode.

Jareth suggested ban'nou (almighty) as an alternative name I like
better.

This is a good way to look at it.  The less stuff in the core, the
more control the expert has over configuring the environment exactly
the way they want it (`Have it your way' :-).  The novice users will
use something more preconfigured.

Has anyone stopped to consider the fact that part of the slowness of
XEmacs may be related to the number of symbols in the symbol table?
