I've been hacking on configure, and some of this stuff has changed
with the advent of autoconf2.  I have made the appropriate
modifications to my version of configure.in.

Steve Baur:  don't bother applying Steve Carney's patch - it will be
included in my Autoconf2 mega-patch.
