It works for me with not one problem in 1.12 (and 1.11 also). Strange.

Do you have any display-time.*suppress.* varibale set? Probably not,
as you would at least have noticed that the balloon displayes the
number of suppressed mails.

It's quite difficult to investigate this any further. First make sure
you really don't load any older version of time.el. Then the best
possibility would be, if you happen to see some strangeness again,
that you send me your spoolfiles's header. On the other hand you maybe
don't want to give these away (even without the message body), which I
understand of course. This is impossible anyway if you see the
strangeness after loading gnus (as there's no longer a spool file).

If you get the help-function... error you mentioned first, you can
force time.el to again scan your spool file by just touching it. See
if this helps.
