 The 'unclutter' program is much superiour.  It runs in the
background, during your Xsession, and turns off the mouse pointer if
you don't move it for a while.  I didn't like 'avoid' mode either.
When you paste with the mouse, it skitters away.  I got my copy of
'unclutter' through Debian Linux.
