When I complained to Jens about the 'load' icon in the modeline not
changing, he directed me to the documentation which says that emacs
must be installed 'sgid kmem' so it will be able to read kernel info
(I'm talking SunOS 4.1.4 here).

However, when I did that, I could not use 'compile' to run any perl
scripts (insecure dependency, etc.)
Since it's been a while since I configured & built Perl5, I don't
remember the exact setup.

Any way out of this deadlock?

I apologize in advance if this turns out to be a pure Perl question.
