I've seen this same thing happen while I was in VM.  It would switch
from a display of the message in the *Preview-INBOX* buffer to
displaying the message in the INBOX buffer (or vice versa; I'm not
sure which), for no apparent reason.  This, after the message had been
display for 15 seconds or so, and I wasn't even touching the
keyboard.  It happened more than once.

I haven't had this occur anyplace outside of VM, though.
