 Well, guess what? On DISPLAY=:1, running at 8bpp, the recycle cursor
is neon green with a darker outline, the way it should be.

 I pressed C-A-F2 to snick out to a text console, and then did:

$ X -bpp 8 :1 tty6 & export DISPLAY=:1;mwm & xterm &

... then pressed A-F6 to get there. Typing 'gnuattach' in the xterm
didn't do what I thought it would; it didn't open a frame, it just
used the xterm, and was solid black and not readable. (I will read the
manual soon.)

mwm = LessTif 0.76 version!  It works!  :-)  I usually use fvwm2.

 I flipped over to tty5, where :0 is, with A-C-F5, and used the menu
below File to open a frame on :1, then thwipped back over. The frame
appeared, I set it down, and then I typed {M-x garTAB ENTER} to see
the recycle cursor, neon green as I've described.

 So why doesn't it look right on my 16bpp Xserver?
