(Speaking only as an English speaking, dumb California Blonde who has
installed both to dabble. Experiences relative to Linux 2/libc-5.4).

Canna is an easier install. The library compiles out of the box, and it
appears to work in 20.1 (20.0final is broken wrt Canna). It only
works with Japanese, it unfortunately binds C-o to toggling Japanese
input (I'd love to suggest an alternative or configurable binding, but
it is not my place to do so), but is very easy to use in the only
sense I can test it: typing Japanese words out of an English/Japanese
dictionary and watching them appear in my XEmacs buffer.

Wnn appears to be smarter and more amibitious in that it supports more
than just Japanese. Installation of 4.2 was a tedious, error prone
process that required minor porting. Once compiled it was
straightforward to install, though I still get warning messages
starting the server up. You must set up a Japanese language
environment prior to use, and there are some bugs in X11 (found w/
fixes available courtesy Jareth Hein) that affect usage.

I'd install both, use Canna initially and watch & help Jareth whip the
Wnn code into shape. It looks like the better of the two overall,
though with a `some assembly required' proviso currently.

We are sorely in need of testers in this area so every little bit
helps.
