For what it's worth, I for one support the change away from
the default white background (and on the monitors I have
access to, things like gray90 *is* white too).

A little survey around here indicates that most of our 35+
developers hate a white background (for me that would
strain my eyes to the point of not being able to work 
full time).  The white background makes XEmacs just look
like some primitive X demo, and doesn't help when we
want to introduce XEmacs here.. ;-)

I fully understand that for some people a white background
does look completely different than it does to my eyes, 
I mean no offence to those.
