OK, why don't we do it the following way:

Just use a special face for the splashscreen, which has 1 (one) back color
we'll have to choose. This will stay unaffected from the users
'default face. And I can produce one (1) version of the logo which
will work with this setting.

I'll have to rework them anyway, as I want to remove the marbled
background. There isn't remaining much of it anyway after breaking
down from 24meg to 25 colors so it just leaves some visual noise which
should go away (note: _not_ the elisp, just the marbled thingie)

_My_ suggestion would be to really use a white/whitesmoke
background. This helps a lot to the impression of the logo's 3d
effect.
On the other hand, a grey75 or grey80 has the advantage to put the
logo more in the visual foreground... a matter of taste. So let's see:

Make a "Options" Entry which reads more or less: white/grey startup
screen, which the user can select, I'll do the two logos, maybe
someone can compose a little XEmacs song which starts playing after 10
seconds idle on startup, and after 20 second we start a process sending
an email to the boss that this quy's apparently sleeping :-)

(OK, sarcasm starts with the email part -- really)
