Just out of curiosity, is that R6 or R6.1 (or even R6.3)? I do know
that the conversion code for compound text was completly rewritten in
R6.2, and that both before and after that there are major problems
with it (API not standardized inside Xlib, etc) I've not looked at the
6.0 code, but am struggling with fixing the 6.3 right now. I'll also
glance at 6.1 and see what I can find there.
