It works for me now.  It looks like the problem for me was the missing
lockname argument to write-region-internal.

Martin raises a good point with the coding system though.  Right now,
it looks as if it is going to be set to "binary" for .gz and .Z
files.  I'm not sure what problems that may cause down the road.
