The detection of png should be made.  I don't know what the
consequences are in the autodetection of canna.  Since the use of
canna requires a special daemon, it would make sense to use canna if
the libraries are found *and* the canna daemon is running.

Can XEmacs be built with more than one input method and deal with it
successfully in a hetergeneous environment?

It should be 4.

And even then you should not assume too much.  I got burned very badly
by the 19.14 betas assuming things they shouldn't when they were built
on a machine without sendmail installed.
