First, a couple of comments.

* The bogus DOC file generation messages are history, at least for now.

* I've found two new bugs
1. The bytecompiler cannot handle MS-DOS encoded files without barfing
cryptically (end of buffer reached ...)

2. Saving an MS-DOS file in dos minor mode generates a prompt about
whether or not to save in plain text format. Answering yes has no
   effect.

Configured for `i586-unknown-linux2.0.28'.

[Martin, can we easily make this say i586-pc-linux, like Emacs?]
